This Google UCP checkout demo shows the complete agentic commerce journey in action — from a shopper asking Gemini for a product, to placing a confirmed order from Etsy without ever leaving Google. The demo is built on the real Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) specification that launched in January 2026, and reflects exactly how Etsy and Wayfair — the first two live UCP merchants — currently work inside Google AI Mode.
What is the Google UCP checkout demo?
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard co-developed by Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. It creates a common language that lets AI agents — including Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — discover products, verify inventory, and complete purchases on a shopper’s behalf, without requiring a custom integration for each AI platform.
This interactive demo simulates a real UCP-powered checkout as it currently works inside Google AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. Every step — the UCP handshake, the connecting animation, the single-pane checkout, and the order confirmation — reflects the documented UCP specification and firsthand screenshots from the February 2026 go-live with Etsy and Wayfair.
The demo is the fastest way to understand what AI-ready commerce actually looks like, and why less than 5% of online stores are currently visible to AI shopping agents. You can also try the interactive UCPhub demo to see how your own store’s products would appear inside an AI chat.
How UCP checkout works — step by step
The five-step journey shown in the demo above maps directly to how the Universal Commerce Protocol operates in production:
1
AI Mode search. The shopper asks Gemini a natural language question — “find me a handmade ceramic mug.” The AI agent searches the Shopping Graph and surfaces UCP-enabled products with a Buy button directly in the results. No website visit occurs at this stage.
2
UCP handshake. When the shopper taps a product, Google’s agent sends a GET /.well-known/ucp request to the merchant’s UCP endpoint. The merchant’s backend responds with its capabilities — checkout, catalog, discounts — and confirms it is ready to transact. This handshake takes milliseconds.
3
Offer confirmed. Once the handshake succeeds, the “Connecting…” animation resolves to a solid Buy button. Inventory is locked, pricing is verified in real time, and a checkout session is created via POST /checkout-sessions. The shopper sees current stock and price — never stale data.
4
Single-pane checkout. Tapping Buy opens a checkout panel inside Google — no redirect, no new tab. Shipping address and payment details are pre-filled from Google Wallet via Google Pay. The merchant remains the seller of record throughout.
5
Order confirmed. The merchant’s backend receives the completed order via the UCP endpoint — identical to any other checkout event. The shopper gets a receipt in Gmail. Post-purchase order tracking and returns are also handled through the same UCP session.
Which merchants have UCP checkout enabled right now?
As of May 2026, UCP-powered checkout on Google’s surfaces is live in the United States for a limited set of merchants. The confirmed live and coming-soon integrations are:

Google is rolling out a simplified UCP onboarding process through Merchant Center to bring merchants of all sizes into the program. Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe have also confirmed they will implement UCP on their platforms. Global expansion beyond the US is expected in late 2026. How to make your store UCP-ready with UCPhub
Because UCP is an open standard, any ecommerce store can implement it — not just Shopify merchants. UCPhub is the fastest path to UCP compliance for WooCommerce stores, custom platforms, and any store not already covered by a platform-level integration.
Getting started takes under 10 minutes:
01
Install the plugin
Add the
UCPhub WooCommerce plugin from the WordPress directory. It instantly creates a UCP-compliant endpoint over your existing catalog with no custom code.
02
Add your API key
Connect with a single API key. UCPhub tracks every UCP spec update and applies them automatically — your store stays compatible as the protocol evolves, with zero engineering overhead.
03
Go live in AI shopping
Your products become discoverable and purchasable by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and every AI agent building on UCP. One integration, every agent.

Frequently asked questions about UCP checkout
What is UCP checkout?
UCP checkout is the transaction layer of the Universal Commerce Protocol. It allows an AI agent — such as Google Gemini or ChatGPT — to complete a purchase on a shopper’s behalf directly inside the AI interface, without the shopper needing to visit the merchant’s website. The merchant remains the seller of record, and the order is processed through their existing checkout backend via a standardized UCP endpoint.
Which stores support Google UCP checkout right now?
As of May 2026, Etsy and Wayfair are the first merchants live with UCP-powered checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify, Target, and Walmart integrations are confirmed as coming soon. Google is also running a simplified Merchant Center onboarding program to expand access to retailers of all sizes in the coming months.
How is UCP different from Shopify’s Agentic Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open, vendor-neutral standard backed by Google, Shopify, Walmart, Visa, Stripe, and 20+ other industry partners. Any store on any platform can implement it. Shopify’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is a proprietary system that only works within Shopify’s ecosystem. UCP is the open web equivalent — similar to how HTTP works for all websites, not just one platform’s sites.
How do I get my WooCommerce store UCP-ready?
Install the UCPhub plugin for WooCommerce, add your API key, and UCPhub automatically creates a UCP-compliant endpoint over your product catalog. The full setup takes under 10 minutes. UCPhub also handles all future protocol updates so your store stays compatible as UCP evolves. See the
install guide for step-by-step instructions.
Does UCP only work with Google AI Mode?
No. UCP is designed to be surface-agnostic. Google’s AI Mode and Gemini app are the first reference implementation, but the open standard means any AI agent — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, or future agents — can use the same UCP endpoint to transact with your store. One integration, every AI agent.
